Portugal -

Our new partner will contribute to strengthening the department’s positioning of the department, which today was again ranked Tier 1 in the Chambers Europe directory

Garrigues has boosted the tax department in Portugal by taking on Miguel Pimentel to coordinate the Portuguese international taxation practice. Pimentel joins partners Pedro Miguel Braz, department director and coordinator of the Portuguese tax litigation practice, and Fernando Castro Silva, in charge of the tax advisory practice, on the task of leading a team with more than thirty practitioners. Garrigues tax department has in this way strengthened its positioning in the Iberian market: today it was recognized for another year running as Tier 1 in the Chambers Europe directory for both Portugal and Spain.

Miguel Pimentel, who returns to Garrigues after working at the firm between 2010 and 2012, has focused in his career on the financial industry, on financing transactions, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, as well as on the taxation of financial products. He has a law degree from Lisbon University and an LL.M. in tax law from Georgetown University. The new Garrigues partner has considerable international experience. He worked for several years in New York advising major financial institutions, including banks and asset managers in international transactions. Before that, he worked with the Department of the Secretary of State for Tax Affairs and was member of the Commission for Corporate Income Tax (IRC) Reform in Portugal, where he took part in a wide range of tax-related legislative projects.

For Miguel Pimentel, “it is an honor and exciting professional challenge to return to the firm where I had the chance to work at the beginning of my career. I accept this challenge and the commitment to bring additional strength to the brilliant work that Garrigues has been doing in Portugal, specifically in the tax law department. This is the right project at the right time”.

João Miranda de Sousa, partner in charge of Garrigues Portugal, described Miguel Pimentel's admission as part of the firm’s commitment to continue attracting the best talent: “This is the return home of an excellent lawyer, with an unusually varied career, marked by a strong international component. I have no doubt he will contribute to reaffirming the top position that the market and directories award to our tax law department every year”.
