Spain: Publication of the minimum wage (SMI) for 2026

Spain -

The minimum wage (SMI) has been increased by royal decree by 3.1%, to 1,221 euros per month, effective since January 1.

Royal Decree 126/2026, of February 18, 2025, setting the minimum wage for 2026, has been published in the BOE.

The minimum wage has been increased by 3.1% on the applicable amount for 2025, and as of January 1, 2026, is set at the following amounts:

The minimum wage only relates to compensation in cash which means that wages in kind cannot under any circumstances give rise to a lower amount.

The revision of the minimum wage will not affect the structure or amount of the wages received by employees where those wages as a whole and on an annual basis are higher than the minimum wage. These amounts include the income, computed on an annual and full-time basis, that employees were receiving in respect of all items pursuant to the provisions of the legislation or collective agreements, arbitration awards and individual employment contracts in force.
