The preliminary draft on Sustainable Consumption proposes to put an end to planned obsolescence, eco-posturing or shrinkflation

Spain -

The text, approved by the Council of Ministers, seeks to strengthen consumer rights and promote responsible consumption with a wide range of measures.

At its meeting on 1 July, the Council of Ministers approved the Draft Law on Sustainable Consumption with the aim of strengthening the protection of consumers and the environment, promoting conscious and responsible consumption and the repair of goods, as well as ensuring clear and reliable information on the environmental characteristics of goods and services.

The preliminary draft, which must continue its processing, prohibits, for example, the advertising of fossil fuels and vehicles that are powered exclusively by them, as well as short flights whenever there is another more sustainable alternative. It also prohibits price increases in ticket resale and includes measures to regulate the so-called "advertising of fear", combat planned obsolescence, avoid eco-posturing or greenwashing and warn the consumer when shrinkflation occurs (the reduction in the amount of content sold without prior notice when it results in an increase in the price per unit).
