Foundation 29 receives the AEPD award for a project in which Garrigues advised

Spain -

On International Data Protection Day, the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) honored Foundation 29 as one of the two recipients tying for the Award for Proactivity and Best Practices in comply with the General Data Protection Regulation and the Spanish Law on Personal Data Protection and the Safeguard of Digital Rights (Category A) for its project HealthData 29 Playbook, a guide to creating a public data repository of health systems, in which Garrigues advised.

HealthData 29 is an initiative facilitating the sharing of health data for use in medical research. When generating these data sets, certain challenges can arise regarding patients’ privacy. The playbook was prepared by Foundation 29 in collaboration with Microsoft, the Microsoft-Universitat de València Chair in Privacy and Digital Transformation, directed by Professor Ricard Martínez, and Garrigues.

The legal design is highly innovative and effectively navigates the complexity involved in complying with the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), allowing the open data project to operate in full accordance with data privacy regulations. Since it was first planned, the project has been in lockstep with objectives of the Open Data Directive and the philosophy underpinning the proposed Data Governance Act.
