The EU Regulation on packaging and packaging waste will start to apply on 12 August 2026

The regulation introduces a new European regulatory framework for packaging and packaging waste.
On 22 January 2025, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 December 2024 on packaging and packaging waste, amending Regulation (EU) 2019/1020 and Directive (EU) 2019/904 and repealing Directive 94/62/EC, was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
In accordance with Article 71, the regulation, which entered into force on 11 February 2025 and which we analyse here, will be generally applicable from 12 August 2026. As an exception, Article 67.5, amending Directive (EU) 2019/904 in relation to certain single-use plastic products, will be applicable from 12 February 2029.
