Garrigues partners’ meeting appoints 16 new partners and senior partner

Rosa Zarza will be the first woman to hold the position of senior partner in the firm. Starting January 1, she will replace Javier Ybáñez, who will continue to be the partner in charge of the Latin American practice

The Garrigues’ partner meeting, which was held in Barcelona, has approved – effective January 1, 2024 – the appointment of 16 new equity partners, as well as Rosa Zarza as the senior partner taking over from Javier Ybáñez who, on conclusion of his tenure, will continue to be the partner in charge of the Latin American practice.

To the four new international partners whose appointments take effect on January 1, we must add the five professionals who became international partners in 2023: Mónica Bolaños (Tax, Bogotá), Ignacio Campino (Tax, Santiago de Chile), João Lima Cluny (Dispute Resolution: Criminal Law, Lisbon), Mark J. English (Antitrust, Brussels) and Manuel Groenewold (Corporate and M&A, Mexico City).

Appointment of senior partner

Rosa Zarza is the global head of Garrigues’ Labor and Employment Department and Garrigues Sustainable. She is a member of the firm’s management committee and is in charge of leading its internal sustainability strategy, which has earned her recognition by the main international directories. In addition, she pursues her academic and scholarly activity as the director of the ESG executive program at Centro de Estudios Garrigues and as a lecturer in postgraduate studies at a number of institutions. She holds a Law Degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a Master’s Degree in Labor Law Counseling from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. In her new position as Garrigues’ senior partner, she will be tasked with ensuring compliance with the firm’s internal policies and good governance, looking after its reputation and international positioning, and handling conflicts of interest in coordination with the firm's executive chairman.

Following the conclusion of his tenure as senior partner and his decision not to seek reappointment, Javier Ybáñez will continue to be the partner in charge of Garrigues’ Latin American practice. Javier has spent his entire professional career at the firm. After leading the Corporate and M&A Department, he has coordinated Garrigues’ expansion in Latin America since 2013. Holder of a Law Degree from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (CEU San Pablo), he is a specialist in capital and financial markets.

Fernando Vives, Garrigues’ executive chairman, remarked: “I am sure that Rosa will do an outstanding job in the position of senior partner, just as she has done throughout her long career in the firm. And that Javier will continue to lead our Latin American practice successfully. As to the new partners, their work will be key to tackling the significant challenges we face moving forward.”
