Experience
Monica has extensive experience advising clients from multiple industries, focusing specially on cross border transactions. Since joining Garrigues, she advised an international lender in a project finance transaction related to the development, construction and operation of a multi-purpose port facility located in the Gulf of Uraba in the Antioquia region. Also, she advised a renowned international bank in a debt transaction to finance the acquisition of multiple targets operating in the healthcare sector as well as a microfinance fintech in the sale of its loan portfolio to secure funding for future lending. Prior to joining Garrigues, Monica acquired valuable experience working as inhouse counsel of a Belgian based asset manager, working specially on debt transactions to agribusinesses and to financial institutions focused in financial inclusion. Monica also has professional experience in bankruptcy law, as she was advisor to the Colombian Bankruptcy Judge. Qualified for practice in Colombia and in the State of New York, she also has experience in major international law firms such as Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP (Paris office) and Dentons (Bogotá office).
Academic background
Monica has an international academic background, with post-graduate studies in the United States (NYU) and in France (Université Panthéon Assas), where she obtained a PhD in Financial Law. Her research and academic endeavors are focused on Financial Law, specifically the law of Financial Derivatives. Monica teaches Financial Derivatives Law and Financial Contracts and Banking Law in a prominent Colombian law school.
