María Elena is senior associate in Garrigues' Corporate and Commercial Department, where she practices in the areas of banking and finance law and commercial contracts. She advises national and international clients on financing transactions and, in particular, financial institutions on syndicated financing transactions, both corporate and project finance and refinancing. She also has experience in providing recurring advice to clients in various commercial sectors, both in the corporate and commercial contracting areas.
In 2019, María Elena completed a 12-month secondment at Garrigues' New York office.
Experience
María Elena Álvarez is senior associate in the Corporate and Commercial Department of Garrigues, where she works since May 2015. After a year's leave of absence, María Elena rejoined Garrigues' finance team in June 2025.
In her professional activity, she advises domestic and international clients, both financial institutions and borrowers, on bilateral and syndicated corporate and project finance transactions, acquisition and asset finance, as well as refinancings, areas in which she has extensive experience. She also provides ongoing advice on project financings.
Additionally, María Elena provides ongoing corporate and commercial advice on a recurring basis to several Spanish companies and international groups with presence in Spain.
Academic background
Double degree in Law and Business Administration from the University of Navarra (2007-2013), having completed:
(i) a semester in 2009 at Simon Fraser University (Vancouver, Canada);
(ii) a semester in 2011 at the University of Southern California (LA, USA); and
(iii) three months in 2012 at IESE Business School (Madrid)
