José Luis lópez Combarros, former president of the ICAC, joins the Garrigues accounting law department

To advise clients and manage the Firm’s accounting knowledge

(11/12/04) José Luis López Combarros, former President of the Instituto de Contabilidad y Auditoría de Cuentas (ICAC), joined Garrigues to reinforce the Firm’s Accounting Law Department.

In addition to providing clients of Garrigues with advice on Accounting Law, José Luis López Combarros will cooperate in the management of the Firm’s knowledge on accounting matters and in its training activities (on an internal and external basis) to be conducted by the Firm in this field.

Bachelor of Business Science and Professor of Corporate Law, José Luis López Combarros, is considered to be one of today’s greatest experts on the development of good accounting practice in Spain.

José Luis López Combarros consolidated his professional career as an expert on Accountign Auditing in Arthur Andersen, where he remained until 2000. He held various top responsibility positions in Arthur Andersen, such as those of Auditing Managing Partner for Spain and Quality Control Managing Partner for Continental Europe and the Eastern European countries, among others. He was simultaneously a member of the Commission appointed by the Instituto de Contabilidad y Auditoría de Cuentas to prepare the General Accounting Plan published in 1990 and a member of the Accounting Standards Committee of the Asociación Española de Contabilidad y Administración de Empresas (AECA).

He presided over the ICAC from October 2000 to June this year and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Banesto and the President of the Bank’s Auditing Committee.

Garrigues has experienced a growing demand over the past years for legal services relating to corporate accounting, which it is expected will increase even further with the implementation of the International Accountign Standards (IAS) in Spain, forecast for 2005, to include accounting items that are a great novelty in this country.

With the engagement of José Luis López Combarros, Garrigues therefore reinforces its Accounting Law Department, comprised of a multidisciplinary team of professionals. Fruit of their knowledge are the works published by two partners of Garrigues: “Aspectos contables y Fiscales de la Reforma de la Legislación Mercantil” (Accounting and Fiscal Aspects of the Corporate Law reform), by Santiago Ilundáin (1989), and “El Derecho Contable en el Siglo XX” (Accounting Law in the XX Century), by Fernando Vives (2003) [included under the title of the Garrigues Collection ‘The History of Law in the XX Century’].
