Garrigues strengthens its presence in northern Portugal with a new office in Porto after 20 years in the city
The new location consolidates the firm’s presence in one of the country’s key economic regions and supports the continued growth of its operations in Portugal
Twenty years after becoming one of the first international law firms to establish an office in Porto, this July Garrigues is moving to a new location. The new premises reinforces the firm’s presence in Portugal and cements its strategic commitment to the Portuguese market.
The move to these new premises, located on Avenida da Boavista, comes at a time of strong growth in Garrigues’ operations in Portugal. In 2025, the Portuguese offices recorded double-digit growth alongside the appointment of two new partners and the ranking of three practice areas in Tier 1 in the Chambers international directory.
With offices in Lisbon and Porto, Garrigues is recognized for its close ties to Portugal’s business community, offering hands-on support to companies operating in the country’s two main economic regions. As part of a truly Iberian and international structure, the firm offers clients a multidisciplinary and multijurisdictional approach, ensuring a seamless experience across both domestic and cross-border matters.
Porto plays an increasingly important role in Garrigues’ strategy. In addition to being one of the city’s leading law firms, the office also enhances the firm’s presence in one of Portugal’s most important industrial and export hubs. Over the last few years, the contribution of the Porto office has doubled, increasing from around 10%, to approximately 20% of Garrigues’ revenues in Portugal, reflecting both the region’s economic growth and the trust clients place in the firm. The new premises therefore represent another milestone in the firm’s long-term commitment to the Portuguese market.
Garrigues’ operations in Portugal are part of a firm-wide model centered on cross-border teams and coordinated legal advice for Iberian and international matters. This approach ensures a consistent client experience and the same high standards of service across all of its offices.
With a presence in 12 countries, on 4 continents and 32 offices, Garrigues continues to cement its position as a leading law firm for Portuguese companies with an international ambition and foreign investors with interests in Portugal.
João Miranda da Sousa, the partner in charge of Garrigues Portugal, noted: “Celebrating two decades in Porto with a new office underscores our long-term commitment to the city and to northern Portugal. Our Porto office has established itself as a strategic part of our operations in the country and plays a key role in our Iberian model which combines close ties with businesses and a fully international reach.”
He added that: “The growth of our Porto office in recent years reflects the rising importance of northern Portugal as a business hub and underscores our ability to support that momentum through increasingly specialized client-focused legal advice.”
