Garrigues makes a strategic tax hire in Portugal

omás Cantista Tavares joins Garrigues Porto (Portugal). Juris doctor and specialist in tax law, Tomás will reinforce the tax team of Garrigues in Portugal, led by the partner Fernando Castro Silva and composed of 22 lawyers.

With more than 20 years’ experience as a tax lawyer under his belt and numerous publications in the area, Tomás Cantista Tavares has a Law Degree from the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (1993) and a Ph.D. in Law and Political Science (specializing in Tax Law), from the Law Faculty of the Universidade de Lisboa (2010). His academic work is focused on the little-studied border between tax and accounting law, with a doctoral thesis entitled “CIT and Accounting – From Realization to Fair Value”.

He is a registered arbitrator at the Portuguese Administrative Arbitration Center (CAAD) and has a wealth of experience as a tax litigation lawyer. Moreover, in his tax advisory work he has taken part in major transactions involving Portuguese and multinational economic groups.

The arrival of Tomás consolidates the continued technical reinforcement of Garrigues’ tax team and it is directly linked to the increasing complexity of Portuguese and international taxation, which calls for the ongoing training and renewal of professionals, when required, in order to tackle it and keep the excellence of Garrigues’ tax practice.

Tomás Cantista Tavares, who will start on the 1st July as Counsel, is widely known in Portugal as one of the experts in the field and will coordinate the tax department at the Garrigues’ office in Porto.

With the new incorporation, Garrigues Portugal counts on a tax team of 22 lawyers, led by Fernando Castro Silva, a highly reputed lawyer, praised by Chambers for his proficiency in both accountancy and tax and for his influential role in several Tax Reform Committees.
