Miriam Barrera, a Garrigues partner, is the co-head for the Cataluña, Aragón and Balearic Islands area and the head of the Tax Department in that area. She has spent her entire professional career at Garrigues, having previously worked for Arthur Andersen. She is the head in the Barcelona office of the tax practice in the financial sector, as well as of the Accounting Law practice.
Among other fields, she is an expert in the tax treatment of M&A deals, taxation under the consolidated tax regime and in Accounting Law. She specializes in the taxation of financial institutions, private equity firms and large business groups. She provides recurring tax advice on the main M&A and internal restructuring transactions performed by these entities.
Of note is her work as an ongoing adviser to the main Catalan financial institutions, as well as her involvement in numerous projects in the context of the reordering of the Spanish financial sector.
She appears as a notable tax lawyer in Spain in the directories Best Lawyers (ranking of lawyers published annually by the newspaper Expansión) and Chambers & Partners.
She is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences staged by the Firm and an array of specialist centers. She has organized numerous tax conferences for myriad financial institutions.
She has collaborated with Escuela Superior de Administración y Dirección de Empresas (ESADE) on their Master’s in Tax Law, where she has taught classes on corporate reorganization transactions. She is a member, representing the Garrigues Foundation, of the Board of Trustees and Governing Board of Fundació IDEC, Barcelona School of Management.
