Regulations protecting historic ships approved in Spain

Spain -

Royal Decree 784/2021 approving the regulations on historic ships and boats and their unique reproductions, which implements additional provision eight of the Maritime Shipping Law, has been passed to adopt protection and support measures for the preservation of historic ships and boats and their unique reproductions, through rules on their registration and their documentation, along with the putting in place of a simplified certification and inspection system.

All transfers and rights related to ownership of historic ships and boats or to their unique reproductions must observe the limitations established in this respect in Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historic Heritage. Similarly, historic ships and boats and their unique reproductions will be eligible for any reductions to port fees and merchant shipping fees and any tax benefits provided in the law.

After approving those regulations, which were published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on October 2, 2021 and entered into force on November 1, Spain has joined the number of its neighboring countries that provide specific treatment for their traditional and historic ships and boats as part of Spain’s cultural heritage.
