The Council of the EU extends sanctions against the Syrian regime for another year
On May 27, 2021, the Council of the EU decided to extend sanctions against the Syrian regime until June 1, 2022, in light of the continued repression of the civilian population in the country. The decision was a result of the EU’s ongoing monitoring of the situation in the Middle Eastern country since sanctions were first introduced against the Assad regime in 2011.
The Council also removed from the list five deceased persons, bringing the total to 283 people targeted by a travel ban and 70 entities subject to an assets freeze.
In order to avoid any impact on humanitarian assistance, the sanctions do not apply to the delivery of food, medicines and medical equipment.
