**[Ordinance no.107-A/2023, of April 18th](https://files.dre.pt/1s/2023/04/07601/0000400004.pdf) was published in the Official Gazette ('Diário da República'), increasing, from € 5.20 to € 6.00, the meal allowance amount for civil servants.**





This update in the meal allowance amount has retroactive effects to January 1st, 2023.

On the other hand, this update in the meal allowance amount leads to an increase in the Social Security contributions exemption limit on amounts paid by employers to their employees as meal allowance:

- € 6.00, if paid in cash;
- € 9.60, if paid in meal ticket.

The meal allowance increase is introduced about half a year after the last increase and comes in the "current context of inflation that directly affects the purchasing power of employees and gives rise to the need of mitigating its effects", according to the abovementioned Ordinance.
