This addition will add even greater strength to the Peruvian team, which is made up of over twenty lawyers (six of whom are partners) specializing in the main areas of business law**. José Chiarella joins Garrigues from the Peruvian law firm Rodrigo, Elías & Medrano Abogados, where he has provided tax advisory services in relation to numerous international projects, particularly in the areas of planning, commercial transactions and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to this, he worked at the Luxembourg office of Ernst & Young as a consultant in the areas of tax planning and structuring of international transactions. Apart from his professional career, José Chiarella’s vast international experience may also be linked to his academic background. Having been awarded a degree in Law from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, he studied a LLM in international business law at the London School of Economics, and completed postgraduate studies in international taxation at Leiden University (Netherlands). He is also the author of several publications on international tax law and has participated in numerous conferences organized by institutions such as the International Fiscal Association (IFA) or the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Garrigues’ Lima office, and its Latin American practice generally, have been bolstered this year with the addition of professionals in areas of strategic interest to the firm. Lawyer Victor Baca, who specializes in administrative law, joined the Peruvian office last February as of counsel. Also to be mentioned is the integration of the Chilean firm Avendaño Merino into the Garrigues network last March, and the recent recruitment by this office of two new partners (Mónica Van der Schraft (litigation and arbitration) and Pedro García Morales (financial law). Garrigues now has over 100 professionals (including 27 partners) in Latin America, operating from its offices in Lima, Bogota, Santiago de Chile, Mexico City and São Paulo.
