This year Garrigues competed with five US legal giants: Weil Gotshal & Manges (which came second), Paul Hastings (third), along with Hogan Lovells, Debevoise & Plimpton and Quinn Emanuel. Garrigues scooped up the International Law Firm of the Year accolade at the annual awards ceremony held by UK legal magazine The Lawyer and in doing so became the first law firm from a non English speaking country to triumph in this category, since it was created five years ago. This year Garrigues competed with five US legal giants: Weil Gotshal & Manges (which came second), Paul Hastings (third), along with Hogan Lovells, Debevoise & Plimpton and Quinn Emanuel. Fernando Vives and Ricardo Gómez, managing partners of Garrigues spoke of the importance of this award: “The characteristics of this award carry recognition that continental European law firms are fully comparable to firms in English speaking countries and in particular that Garrigues is much more than an Iberian firm; it is an international firm.” The awards were delivered in London last night in a ceremony that brought together the cream of the international legal market. Around 1,500 lawyers attended. The managing partner of the London office Guillermo Múñoz Alonso received the award on behalf of Garrigues. The judging panel comprising outstanding lawyers from multinationals and the finest UK firms, alongside members of The Lawyer’s editorial team said –in relation to Garrigues- that “Continental European firm achiever wins this year as International Law Firm of the Year for its outstanding expansion in regions such as Latin America”. Besides Garrigues’ strategic vision as an international firm, the panel also took into consideration features such as the significance of the transactions completed throughout the year and its strong performance. The winners were selected in an intricate research process involving hundreds of interviews with industry experts.
