For Garrigues, ranked number two in Tax Business’s list of the top 100 firms, the launch of a tax practice in Portugal enhances services for clients in the Iberian Peninsula and marks the beginning of a new stage of growth.
The Portuguese tax practice will integrate into Taxand, of which Garrigues is a founding member. Taxand is an independent international alliance exclusively dedicated to tax issues and includes 1,000 professionals at 21 firms located in as many countries across four continents.
For the past 23 years, Fernando Castro Silva has practiced tax law, offering services to large Portuguese financial groups, multinationals, credit institutions, insurance companies, and civil engineering and public works companies.
As a member of the Estrutura de Coordenação da Reforma Fiscal (ECORFI), he had a relevant role in Portugal’s latest tax reform in 2000. He also actively participated in the Working Group for the Analysis of Tax Benefits, created in 2005 to analyze tax benefits, especially in the areas of capital gains and asset revenue.
Garrigues currently employs 1,525 professionals, of which nearly 600 are dedicated to taxation. Fernando Castro Silva and his practice will integrate into Garrigues’s Portuguese branch of Garrigues, Leónidas, Matos, bringing the number of professionals practicing various fields of law at the firm to nearly 60.
