# The European Parliament approves the Directive on Greenwashing

**The new European regulation, which aims to prevent unfair commercial practices, will have to continue its process before the Council of the EU for its final approval and its subsequent publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.**





On 17 January, the European Parliament gave the green light to the Greenwashing Directive. Its purpose is to combat unfair commercial practices that create difficulties for consumers when buying or contracting ecological or circular products or services. To achieve this, certain problematic commercial habits related to greenwashing and the early obsolescence of products will be added to the EU list of prohibited commercial practices.

The Greenwashing Directive amends Directive 2005/29/EC, concerning unfair business-to-consumer commercial practices in the internal market, and Directive 2011/83/EU, on consumer rights.

Once it has also been formally approved by the Council of the EU, it will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU). After that, the Member States will have twenty-four months to transpose it into their national legal systems.
