Eduardo Abad Valdenebro
Eduardo Abad is the partner in charge of the Tax Department of Garrigues, where he has pursued his professional career following a period at Arthur Andersen. He specializes in tax matters, especially in the banking, finance and insurance industries. He has also participated in numerous M&A transactions and is a recognized expert in accounting law and corporate law.
His areas of expertise include the taxation of financial institutions and insurance companies, as well as all tax aspects relating to capital markets and financial products. He is the lawyer of choice for the main Spanish and foreign financial institutions operating in these markets.
He also provides recurring advice on regulatory, tax and corporate matters in the context of the main M&A and internal restructuring transactions carried out by the above-mentioned institutions, as well as by private equity entities and those from the industrial sectors.
He has been actively involved in analyzing and designing financial products and is an expert in transactions involving the issuance of debt and preference shares by national and international issuers, coordinating work with lawyers from other jurisdictions.
He has also participated in some of the most high-profile State aid proceedings brought by the European Commission and in appeals filed before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
He provides on-going assistance on tax and legal matters to the main Spanish and foreign private banking institutions.
Eduardo Abad features in several legal directories such as the International Law Office’s Client Choice Guide and Iberian Lawyer. He is also listed in Chambers&Partners’ tax practice area, both in its Chambers Global edition as well as its Chambers Europe edition, forming part of the team of tax experts singled out for praise by the directory, which ranks Garrigues among the top tax firms in Spain. According to the directory, Eduardo Abad is a tax expert recognized and appreciated by clients for being a “consummate professional with great empathy towards his clients” and on account of his “accessibility and skills in negotiations”, as well as “his excellent technical and general abilities and his commitment to client care”.
He has been an associate lecturer at Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE E-2 and E-3) since 1999, delivering classes on a number of subject areas (e.g. tax law, financial and analytical accounting and tax accounting). He is also a director and lecturer on the Executive Programs offered by Centro de Estudios Garrigues and a lecturer on tax law, finance and taxation on various MBAs (MBA La Salle IGS Business, MBA Instituto de Estudios Bursátiles IEB).
Eduardo Abad is a member of the Madrid Bar Association and the Financial Instruments Expert Forum of the Spanish Accounting and Business Administration Association (AECA). He also belongs to Club Empresarial ICADE, which aims to encourage and develop entrepreneurship among university students and cooperation between its members in the business world.
He has contributed on a number of occasions to the work of the Spanish Employers’ Federation (CEOE) in the tax area through its Tax Committee.
