José Manuel Mateo Sierra
José Manuel is a partner in the Labor and Employment Law Department at Garrigues, where he has pursued his professional career following his time at Arthur Andersen. Within the labor and employment law area, he specializes in providing strategic advice on labor law and HR-related matters to senior executives and corporate HR management.
With a view to maintaining a global overview of the business world, José Manuel is a member of various in-house groups and industries at Garrigues: Banks and Financial Institutions, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sports & Entertainment.
Among other areas, he is an expert in managing and advising on the labor-law related aspects of domestic and international corporate transactions (mergers, acquisitions, outsourcing, etc.) and on all of the processes deriving from such transactions: reorganizations and restructuring, business successions, harmonizing collective labor agreements, senior management contracts, etc. He regularly contributes to the implementation of these types of processes at private equity entities, investment funds, etc. as well as collaborating with the other international firms involved.
In the field of sports law, José Manuel advises some of Spain’s leading sports entities and is the labor and employment coordinator of the Sports&Entertainment industry.
He also advises and collaborates with the foremost international institutions and business guides (World Bank, Doing Business).
José Manuel has been singled out for inclusion in the legal world’s top directories, such as Best Lawyers, in which he has appeared for the last four years in a row.
He lectures on the Executive Master’s Programs at Centro de Estudios Garrigues and is a labor law lecturer on various specialist master’s degrees (Alfredo Di Stéfano Master’s Degree in the Management of Sports Entities, UEM-Real Madrid). He is also a regular contributor to courses taught by Fundación Carolina for the training of Latin American lawyers.
He regularly speaks at seminars and courses staged by the Firm and an array of specialist centers (FIDE, Aranzadi and Aranzadi del Deporte).
In 2012, he has taken part in various specialist courses at the Bank of Spain on the subject of compensation of executive personnel at banks, the consequences of the reform to the financial system, etc.
He is a member of the Madrid Bar Association and the Spanish Labor Law Forum (FORELAB).
Degree in Business Law from Universidad Complutense y San pablo-CEU.
Coauthor of various books and handbooks: “The Proof of Court Depositions” and “The Insolvency Law”, published by the Garrigues Collection (Editorial Marcial Pons).
He has recently contributed to the work “Developments in Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability” and the “Guide to the Principle, Practices and Benefits of Corporate Social Responsibility”, published by Garrigues and AENOR.
