General strike called for International Women’s Day

Spain -

Labor Alert 5-2018

The labor unions UGT and CCOO have called a general strike on March 8, 2018, to mark International Women’s Day. The purpose of the strike is to speak out against the inequality and discrimination women face in the employment market, particularly the pay gap, the chronic problem of female unemployment, gender violence and the dearth of measures to protect victims, especially in the employment arena, and the government’s gender equality policies.

The strike is planned for two hours during each work shift scheduled for March 8, 2018, as follows:

  • For people who work both morning and afternoon and those on a continuous working day starting in the morning, the walk-out time is from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
  • Those on a continuous working day in the afternoon will strike from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
  • Those working a continuous night shift will walk out during the first two hours of their shift on March 8, unless a different time is announced for the sector or company in question.

The labor union CGT has also call for a general strike on the same day, although for a full 24 hours. In the Basque Country, the labor unions ELA, LAB, Steilas, ESK, Hiru and EHNE Bizkaia have organized two four-hour strikes for March 8, between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm and between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm.
