Garrigues has inaugurated its new premises in New York, located in the heart of Manhattan (780 Third Avenue, 40th floor). The opening ceremony took place yesterday at the Instituto Cervantes, a stone’s throw from the Firm’s new office. Representatives from the principal U.S. institutions, the Spanish business community and the legal profession were among more than 250 people present. Guests at the opening ceremony included the Spanish Foreign Affairs Minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos.

In his speech, the Firm’s Chairman Antonio Garrigues, urged those present to continue working to promote relations between Spain and the United States, pointing to some of the ties that bind the two countries, “We share a common interest in Latin America, where our work must continue. It is also worth highlighting the ever more decisive role being played by the Hispanic community in the US and the very substantial flow of investment between the two countries. In the last five years, investments by Spanish companies in the States have outstripped the sum total of those made in the previous fifty years.” Antonio Garrigues finished by praising the work done by the Instituto Cervantes in raising the profile of the Spanish language and culture throughout the globe.

In 1973, Garrigues was among the first of the European law firms to open an office in New York, since then its practice has grown steadily, becoming a touchstone for American companies with a presence in Spain. The New York office currently boasts an eight-strong team of professionals under the coordination of partners Xavier Ruiz and José Ramón Villar, serving the M&A, joint ventures, corporate restructuring, tax planning, corporate/commercial law and litigation practice areas.

As well as advising on Spanish law, the office has assembled a specialist team on the Latin American market, backed up by the member firms of Affinitas, the Latin American alliance promoted by Garrigues and present in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Portugal.
