Garrigues placed extremely well in the rankings published today in the new Chambers Europe guide. Focusing exclusively on the European legal market, the latest guide contains new ranking categories.

Specifically, Garrigues was ranked in Band 1 (the highest level) in twelve categories: Administrative law, Arbitration, Insolvency, Energy and Natural Resources, Tax, Real Estate, Labor and Employment, Environment, Private Equity, Project Finance, Telecoms, New Technologies and Zoning, a category in which Garrigues is the sole Band 1-ranked firm.

The firm’s healthy position is borne out by comments from clients, including opinions such as “Garrigues has the most comprehensive telecom and new technologies practice in the Spanish market”, “the finest team the Spanish market has to offer in zoning law” and “the best all-round private equity team on the market”.  Garrigues was also described as one of the firms “with the greatest creativity and flexibility, with first class negotiating skills.”

Special mention is made in the Chambers Europe Leading Lawyers ranking of the firm’s lawyers Ricardo Gómez (Tax) and José Guardo (Project Finance) –both of whom were classed as star performers – and the firm’s managing partner, José María Alonso, who receives four mentions and is described as “one of the most sought after international arbitrators, at both Spanish and pan-European level”.

The firm’s competitors were also highly complimentary towards Garrigues, including comments such as “Garrigues’ long-standing tradition and positioning in the insolvency law market marks it out as a major league player” or “the firm has the highest profile in the administrative law market”, with others highlighting the Environment Department, the largest in the market, noted for “an impressive work rate and excellent reputation”.

One of the elite Project Finance firms worldwide
Furthermore, the rankings published in the April 2007 issue of the American Lawyer magazine bear witness to the quality of Garrigues’ Project Finance Team. Garrigues was placed 12th worldwide in the 2006 rankings, with a total of nineteen project finance transactions worth a total of $4,704 million. Moreover, Garrigues is the only non-English speaking firm to appear in the ranking.

The largest law firm in continental Europe, Garrigues can currently boast over 1,600 professionals, the most extensive network of offices on the Iberian Peninsula and seven international branches (New York, Shanghai, Casablanca, Brussels, Warsaw, Lisbon and Oporto). The firm is also a promoter of Affinitas, an alliance present in the principal Latin American markets, and is a founding member of Taxand, with a network of offices spanning 36 countries worldwide.
