  • João Miranda de Sousa, new managing partner of Garrigues Portugal 7/23/2015
    João Miranda de Sousa has been appointed as the new managing partner of Garrigues Portugal, which currently has offices in Lisbon and Oporto. Miranda de Sousa joined the firm in 2008, since when he has been the head of Garrigues’ Intellectual Property Department at Iberian level.

    Garrigues was awarded ‘Spain Tax Firm of the Year’ and ‘Spain Transfer Pricing Firm of the Year’ at the European Tax Awards ceremony held last night in London. These prestigious accolades are bestowed annually by International Tax Review (ITR) in recognition of excellence in tax matters by European firms. This year the Firm also shared a third award for its participation in the sale of ONO to Vodafone, named European Telecommunications and Technology Tax Deal of the Year. Since these awards were created in 2005, Garrigues has been named tax firm of the year on eight occasions and transfer pricing firm of the year on another three.

    Garrigues was named ‘Spain Law Firm of the Year’ at the Chambers Europe Awards for Excellence award ceremony held in Amsterdam. This accolade is the result of research carried out by British publication Chambers & Partners for the annual edition of its European Guide. The study is based on personal interviews with clients throughout the year and is aimed at rewarding the work of the best legal team in each country. The Chambers award is the third prestigious international award won by Garrigues in the space of a month. The other two awards, also for law firm of the year, were granted by leading publications Legal Business and International Financial Law Review.

    Once again Garrigues has gained recognition with the ‘Client Choice Awards’ granted by the legal journal International Law Office. Four professionals have gained accolades for services in their respective fields of practice: Eduardo Abad, managing partner of the firm’s tax department; José María Ruiz Ilundáin, partner responsible for Garrigues Commercial law department in San Sebastián; Carla Frangoni, commercial partner in San Sebastián; and Jaime Bragado, also a partner in the commercial department at the firm’s Madrid office.

    The Garrigues team in Peru has bolstered its practice with the addition of four specialists in corporate and finance law from Estudio Rubio. This group of lawyers, led by Oscar Arrús, also comprises Sergio Amiel, Thomas Thorndike and José Francisco Meier. These four professionals, renowned in the Peruvian legal market, will form part of a team headed by the Spanish partner Álvaro Valle which is already comprised of fifteen lawyers who cover the key business law areas (M&A, corporate, finance, tax, public/infrastructure law and labor law).
